Messe Stuttgart took off in 2018 with an enlarged exhibition area: The new Hall 10 gained record results for the company in turnover and return. Currently, Messe Stuttgart expects a turnover of 178 million Euro. This resulted in earnings before leases and taxes of 34 million Euro, 20 percent more than in the equally strong even year 2016. These preliminary figures were announced by the presidents Ulrich Kromer von Baerle and Roland Bleinroth at the New Year’s press conference today (10 Jan 2019).
“The trade fair and conference business in Stuttgart continues to grow. Even with 15 percent more exhibition area, we are one of the best occupied trade fair venues in Europe. In its first year in operation, the Paul Horn Hall was already booked with 16 events. This investment was right and is already bearing fruit”, Ulrich Kromer draws balance.
More than 1.36 million visitors came to the 65 trade fairs between January and December. 23,571 exhibitors were represented at the Stuttgart venue in 2018 - a record high. President Roland Bleinroth is in particular delighted with the success of the Stuttgart company's internationalisation strategy:
“Our engagement in 52 countries pays off. Almost 30 percent of our exhibitors and more than 10 percent of the visitors now come from abroad.” A fact the entire region benefits from.
From the expanded exhibition space, the larger events organised either by Messe Stuttgart or by guest event organisers profit the most. Record figures for both exhibitors and visitors were therefore achieved at several fairs in 2018: the travel exhibition CMT, the gastronomy trade fair INTERGASTRA/GELATISSIMO, the World’s leading trade fair for roller shutters, doors/gates and sun protection systems R+T, the meeting point for the metal working industry AMB and the logistics trade fair LogiMAT.
Sharpened profile for the Industrial Solutions business division
In 2018, Messe Stuttgart further sharpened its strong profile in industrial solutions trade fairs and placed three new topics at the same time. CastForge, the trade fair for castings and forgings with processing, was the first of them to make its successful debut with 153 exhibitors from 18 nations (international exhibitors accounted for 61 percent). T4M, the new platform for medical technology will take place in May. After the official end for the guest event MEDTEC at the location, Messe Stuttgart developed the trade fair together with relevant companies and associations of the industry.
In October, IN.STAND, the trade fair for maintenance and services, is launched. The cancellation of related events has created a market gap in southern Germany which Messe Stuttgart will close. "The focal points of this new trade fair will be industrial maintenance, smart maintenance, predictive maintenance and industry 4.0. Also, topics like artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) will play a major role”, Kromer states.
A further strengthening of the Industrial Solutions business division will result from the takeover of the trade fair association Expo 4.0. The trade fairs TV TecStyle Visions, WETEC and GiveAdays which in the past have already been held as guest events on the Stuttgart venue, have now been added to the portfolio of Messe Stuttgart’s own events. Most recently, in the spring of 2018, the trade fair association was able to record a total of 566 exhibitors from 28 countries and 13,700 trade visitors from 41 countries. The declared target: To consistently expand the international character of the trade fair association and to establish it as the leading event for the areas of textile finishing, advertising technology and promotion. The trade fair association Expo 4.0 has in recent years developed to become an important sector event of international significance.
CMT-Know how successfully transferred to Leipzig
The Stuttgart based company also invested in events for the public. For the first time, CMT hosted the leading Tourism & Caravanning (TC) trade fair in East and Central Germany at its Leipzig location. Around 500 exhibitors and more than 60,000 visitors travelled the world together on the Leipzig exhibition grounds in November. Newly incorporated into the association of spring fairs was the dance fair “DanceWorld Stuttgart” as a trade fair and workshop event for all dance enthusiasts.
Business with guest organisers grows
Another driving force behind the positive development of Messe Stuttgart is the business with guest events, congresses and events: Last year, event organisers booked the rooms of the ICS International Congress Center Stuttgart a total of 150 times. One focal point were renowned medical congresses like the 28th Annual Conference of the German Senology Association with 2,600 congress participants and around 100 exhibitors.
The congress fair focused on innovations, treatment methods and trends in gynaecology, urogynaecology, gynaecological oncology, reproductive medicine, obstetrics and other topics. This year in March, INTERPHARM, a congress fair for the pharmaceutical industry will kick-off the series of high-profile, specialised events in the healthcare and pharmaceutical business. It is known as the leading professional development event for pharmacists and pharmaceutical assistants in Germany. This scientific congress, which is to feature more than 60 speakers, is expected to draw some 3,000 participants from Germany and other countries. Shortly thereafter, also in March, the 49th Congress of the German Society for Endoscopy and Imaging Techniques (DGE-BV) follows, which is expecting around 800 visitors and 50 exhibitors.
Messe Stuttgart International develops positively
With twelve successful events in China, Brazil and Turkey, attracting over 2,000 exhibitors and over 150,000 visitors, Messe Stuttgart International continued the positive development of the previous year in 2018.
In 2019, the "International Team" of Messe Stuttgart will organise the German appearance at Metalex in Bangkok, the largest metalworking trade fair in the ASEAN region, on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi) and others.
Master Plan 2025: How it goes on with the fairgrounds
Messe Stuttgart is not going to rest on the positive developments but will invest in infrastructure for the future. For this purpose, the Master Plan 2025 was developed. It demonstrates what is generally possible on the premises.
“The approved areas available are limited. Therefore, a general approach was necessary before particular building projects could be addressed in detail.” explains Ulrich Kromer. The associate partners - the Federal state of Baden-Württemberg and the City of Stuttgart - gave the green light for the planning.
There is need in different place: New parking lots, more space for the service providers, a new home for the company fire brigade, an improved traffic situation on the local road L1192 including the main gate.
Solutions have been found for these needs. New buildings will be erected on the north side at the altitude changes to provide space for service partners, logistics and the fire brigade. Offices are also possible on the upper levels. A parking garage P40 in spindle construction can be built behind the Bosch parking garage, a parking garage P1 could “cap” the suburban train trough. This would create 1,500 additional parking spaces. The Master Plan also includes ideas for an 11th hall, a new Conference Centre West and a new underground car park. “In the next step, the earnings and thus also the financing possibilities are examined and the plans discussed with the committees.” said Kromer.
